The golden chicken of Ghent
The city of Ghent was the historic capital of Flanders. Ghent distinguished through the history for its cloth industry. It left the city economy for ages and contributed to rising both Bruges and Antwerp as seaports. This industry, trading revenues, and taxes gave the city the privilege of prosperity. Therefore, there was always a need to protect the town and who else to protect it, and it’s treasure but the sculpture on the top of Ghent’s Belfry tower. Taking your eyes all the 91 meters up, you would see a golden monument. Usually, people think it is a chicken in their first sensation, but in reality, it is a golden dragon.

In one story, it is believed that the golden dragon was a gift from the city of Bruges from the medieval time. However, other sources can link it to the Scandinavian dragon of Constantapolis that was made out of wood. The recent golden one was not the only development that happened over time, and there are several editions of it inside the belfry tower you can enjoy it once you climb the 350 steps to the top 360 panorama balcony.
Arriving at Ghent by train from Brussels or Bruges would leave you out of the historical center; therefore, to reach the belfry tower, please ride the light rail no.1 to its final destination direction Korenmarkt. Once you exit the light rail, walk till the end of the street, and you will see the Belfry tower to your right
